Videos and Micro-learning
I joined Renton Technical College in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, when education was scrambling to shift to online, hybrid, and HyFlex learning options.
I immediately realized that videos were often the most accessible, engaging and flexible teaching tools. I began creating videos that could be shared widely and embedded into courses while introducing library instruction topics in a fresh way. Along the way, I have gained skills in screen share and capture tools, video editing software, camera and audio equipment, scripting, and shot lists. Check below for video examples.
The "Introduction to the Lightboard" video introduces faculty at Renton Technical College to the available lightboard technology and demonstrates how they can utilize it to enhance their instruction. The video was created together with Joshua Allen, fellow faculty librarian at Renton Technical College. Technologies utilized: Panasonic LUMIX GH4 camera, eGlassFusion and lightboard, Camtasia, Adobe Premier
The script and shot list for the "Introduction to the Lightboard" video. Originally written by Joshua Allen, we collaborated to produce the video, modifying the script during filming and reordernig sequences during editing.
The "Introduction to the Lightboard" video plays during the Vice President of Instruction's Showcase on May 26, 2023 at Renton Technical College. The Instructional Designer at RTC responded: "Thank you for sharing your eGlass video today. Many instructors are eager to do what you demonstrated."
In the Fall 2024, I proposed a Self-Defense course for Renton Technical College students and employees to be run through the Continuing Education department. My proposal was accepted and turned into a 4 week course, which I co-taught with security officer James Dowdy. We created an introductory video with filmmaker Josh Allen showing a real life application of self-defense. Technologies utilized: script developed with ChatGPT prompts, video shot with Panasonic LUMIX GH4 camera, video edited with Adobe Premier.
